In 2009 we welcomed four new groups to Ardvullin. Muirhouse Youth Development Group supports children in the Muirhouse area of Edinburgh through open youth clubs, sports groups, outdoor education, employability programmes and residential programmes. Many of the children who came to HopScotch are on the margins of society and in many cases completely disengaged from mainstream life resulting in them finding it extremely hard to access opportunities and find a positive place and role in society.
We also welcomed Seafield School in Ardrossan who support young people with challenging behaviour; Streetlink based in Clydebank and Findlay Family Network based in St Georges Cross in Glasgow. As well as these organisations we also worked with 22 other projects who each brought 12 children that haven’t been on a HopScotch break before and the majority have never been on holiday before.

We recruited Angus MacLellan to the post of Project Worker. After graduating from Aberdeen University with a degree in Geography, Angus had been working as a snowboard instructor at Nevis Range in Fort William and as an Activities Instructor at Highland Activities. Angus co-ordinates our activities, guides groups on day trips and drives our minibus. His energy, commitment and flexibility make the programme fun and educational and ensure the children have a fantastic HopScotch experience with memories that will last a lifetime.
Daily activities include visits to Ardtoe Beach, Waterfall and nature walks, cable car trip to Aonach Mor, a Seal Island cruise, canoeing, horseriding, visit to the Sea Life Centre, fishing and indoor climbing.
In February Barry and Elaine Peters joined us as Caretakers at Ardvullin undertaking the tasks of joinery, decorating and garden maintenance prior to the start of the season. Along with their dogs Lucky and Rex they have settled in well and enjoy meeting the children and helping out with evening activities.

We took delivery of a brand new Mercedes 17 seater mini coach in July, funded by Eagle Aid, First Group, the National Lottery Awards for All and the Barbara Ward Foundation. We are extremely delighted and grateful for the bus which will enable us to continue to provide free, safe and comfortable travel for over 300 children per year.
The Wooden Spoon funded an extension to our playground and the work was completed at the end of August. It includes a slide, tower and climbing area and it is already a great hit with the children and compliments our existing outdoor play area.
“Day one – after we arrived we went for a long walk in the woods and then had hot chocolate, played for a bit and went to bed. Day 2 – we went up the Gondola and climbed the mountain next to Ben Nevis and had lunch there. Day 3 – went for a walk next to lots of water and found a waterfall we could drink from. Day 4 – Went canoeing on Loch Linnhe.” My favourite activity was canoeing and my 2nd favourite was the waterfall. James, aged 11
